The Chelsea fans have been feeling downbeat in the Transfer Tavern of late due to their side’s recent decline in the Premier League.
Despite the fact there are still 6 fixtures left to play in the Premier League, it looks certain that Chelsea will be playing Europa League football next season, much to the disappointment of the resident Blues faithful propping up our bar. Chelsea’s downward spiral has shown no sign of ending in recent weeks and, as such, they now find themselves 10-points adrift of Tottenham Hotspur in 4th place.
Regardless of who is in charge of the club next season, the club will need to have a serious rethink about the personnel who currently make up the squad in order to decide which areas are most in need of strengthening. Naturally, it must be considered that players departing the club will dictate Chelsea’s strategy in the summer window.
With that to consider, it’s likely that Chelsea will be in the market for a new attacking midfield to replace Eden Hazard next season. Hazard’s future has been called into question for the majority of the season so far due to both Real Madrid’s supposed desire to revamp their squad and, the Belgian’s personal desire to embark on a new challenge after almost 6 years at Stamford Bridge.
Whether Hazard will swap West London for Madrid remains to be seen, but if Chelsea agree to sell their talisman this summer they must ensure that they can convince Willian (valued at 28.8 million by Transfermarkt) to remain at the club. Losing one match-winner would be a bitter blow for the club to take, but losing two within the same window would be a cataclysmic disaster.
Willian has arguably been Chelsea’s most creative and effective attacking player since the turn of the year and, the quality of his performances have supposedly sparked interest from Manchester United. However, according to The Sun, Willian has quashed United’s interest by declaring he is happy at the club and ready to help Chelsea improve during the next campaign.
The Chelsea supporters should dearly hope that Willian maintains his current stance throughout the summer, as his performances this season will undoubtedly have caught the attention of Europe’s heavyweight clubs. The loss of Hazard would be an extremely difficult one for Chelsea to deal with, but adding Willian into the equation would tear the heart out of Chelsea’s attack and leave the club in a state of turmoil at the beginning of the new season.
