Chelsea are preparing an astonishing deal for Liverpool midfielder Raul Meireles and are willing to offer Salomon Kalou and Daniel Sturridge to land him, according to Caughtoffside.com.
Liverpool are believed to be open to offers for the Portuguese midfielder, especially after signing midfielers Charlie Adam and Jordan Hnederson this summer.
Chelsea boss Andre Vilas-Boas has made signing a central midfielder a priority after the long-term injury suffered by Michael Essien during pre-season.
This will be a very interesting offer to Liverpool and they may find it hard to turn down, despite maybe not wanting to send one of their players to a direct Premier League rival. But Liverpool are short on quality in the forward department and Kalou and Sturridge may offer some much needed firepower.
Meireles, 28, scored the only goal in the 1-0 win for Liverpool at Stamford Bridge in February and was a star performer for the reds as soon as Kenny Dalglish took over, scoring 5 goals in their impressive end of season run.
But the former Porto midfielder hardly figured for Liverpool in pre-season and has started both Premier League games this season the bench. But the Portuguese came off the bench to play a significant role in the 2-0 win over Arsenal at the weekend, which may have offered a dilemma to the Liverpool hierarchy, who may yet believe Meireles has a part to play at Anfield this season.
But it seems Chelsea have turned to Meireles, and they may push through with the deal if their pursuit of Tottenham’s Luka Modric fails.
