Dougie Freedman is ‘working’ to give Hodgson what he wants at Crystal Palace this month – report

The Crystal Palace fans in the Transfer Tavern are delighted with what Roy Hodgson has done at Selhurst Park this season. The Eagles looked down and out after a few weeks in the English top flight, but under the former England boss’ tutelage, they’re now comfortably in 12th place.

That being said, the real task lies ahead for the club, and safety in the Premier League is far from assured. News that work is being done behind the scenes, then, will come as music to the ears of our resident Eagles.

According to the Times, Crystal Palace’s sporting director, Dougie Freedman, is ‘working’ to bring in a few faces at Selhurst Park, with Roy Hodgson desperate to bring in more depth and quality.

Though any deal remains some way off, it is said, the fact that they are working to improve things at the club is certainly positive. If nothing else, it proves that the Crystal Palace brass aren’t resting on their laurels. It would have been quite easy to sit back and let Hodgson continue to work with the current squad, given his recent success. However, they aren’t doing that, apparently, and the fact that Freedman is keen to bring in ‘a number of potential signings’ rather than just 1 or 2 is positive too.

There are a number of gaps within the Crystal Palace squad that are concerning. Most notably, the poor form of Christian Benteke is a real problem. The Belgian is really struggling to find the net at present, and so if the club want to improve in the rest of the campaign, they need more quality up front.

They’ll also need to plug a few gaps at the back, with their defence certainly looking vulnerable throughout the season so far.

Hodgson clearly has big plans for the squad, and news of Freedman’s hard work will certainly go down well with him.

Landlord’s Verdict

Things could turn sour at Selhurst Park just as quickly as they improved, and so Hodgson needs to be careful. Even now, his side is only a loss or two away from danger, and he must be wary of that.

Fortunately, with just over 2 weeks until the transfer window closes, there is more than enough time to get a few deals over the line.
