Tottenham Hotspur have been ominously quiet in the transfer market so far this summer despite a whole host of rumours concerning potential outgoing and incoming transfers, but a recent report from the London Evening Standard has shed some light on their overall strategy.

According to the report, Tottenham are expected to ramp up their transfer activity now that the World Cup has reached it's conclusion, with the signing of a versatile attacking player the 'priority' for Pochettino this summer.

The same report claims that Anthony Martial is Pochettino's number one target, and it's easy to see why: Martial is capable of playing in an inside-left position and through the middle at centre-forward, so there's no doubt he fits the bill in terms of versatility.

However, signing a player from a Premier League rival is never a financially shrewd endeavour, and that will give Daniel Levy plenty of cause for concern.

The fact that Martial has been unpredictability inconsistent during his career at United thus far is also a notable cause for concern and, with these points to consider, Spurs should make Dries Mertens their priority in the transfer market this summer.

Unlike Martial, Mertens proved himself at the top level last season by spearheading Napoli's title-challenge in a new-look centre-forward position for a player who has spent the majority of his career on the left-side of an attacking midfield three.

In his career so far Mertens has managed to score a whopping 68 goals and provide 39 assists from 170 Serie A appearances, and with a record that prolific there's no doubt he will command a hefty transfer fee.

But at 31-years-of-age Napoli could be tempted to cash in on the Belgium international whilst his stock remains sky-high, paving the way for Spurs to land a perfect alternative to Martial.

Although Martial would undoubtedly be an investment for the future, Pochettino would be wise to sign proven talent this summer in order to finally end his silverware hoodoo and give the fans something to shout about.

Signing Mertens represents the perfect investment due to his deadly end-product, versatility and huge breadth of experience in Europe, so Levy shouldn't hesitate to make a bid for his services if the Serie A outfit are willing to entertain the possibility of selling this summer.
