Manchester City supporters in the Football Transfer Tavern are looking forward to the new Premier League campaign with a fresh vigour following the arrival of Manuel Pellegrini and with him £90 million worth of talent as they look to wrestle back the title.
One area that most Citizens fans admit still needs to be addressed is in defence and Mirror Football report that Pellegrini is looking for a new centre back to solidify his defence after watching his new side ship eight goals in their last three pre-season games.
The former Malaga boss has been chasing Real Madrid defender Pepe this summer but incoming Real boss Carlo Ancelotti is refusing to sell the Portuguese international.
The Etihad Stadium club have now been searching for alternatives and are looking at Liverpool target Kyriakos Papadopoulos plus Napoli skipper Paolo Cannavaro.
Papadopoulos, 21, has emerged as a star man at Schalke and the Greek national team but he missed most of last season following a serious knee operation and he is yet to make a full recovery on the pitch.
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has been strongly linked with Greek powerhouse but only on a loan move until he can prove his fitness at Anfield.
City have also reportedly been offered Cannavaro, 32, although it is thought that the younger brother of Italian legend Fabio is one of least attractive options available to Pellegrini.
The Citizens have already lost Matija Nastasic to an ankle injury during pre-season leaving just Vincent Kompany and Joleon Lescott to feature in central defence for the start of their Premier League campaign at the weekend.
Ideally the Chilean manager would like to bring in another central defender before the transfer window closes on September 2nd.
