Sir Alex Ferguson has stated that he will not be making any transfer moves in the January window, but there are increasing suggestions that he may be considering Neven Subotic as a cure for his central defensive problems.
Nemanja Vidic suffered a cruciate knee ligament injury in their 2-1 Champions League exit to Basel, leaving Manchester United with some concerns for their title hopes.
Subotic currently plays for Borussia Dortmund and has already been linked with a move to Old Trafford in the past as a possible replacement for Rio Ferdinand in the summer.
But given that Vidic’s injury will leave him out for the rest of the season, Ferguson may have to rethink his refusal to enter the transfer market in January.
Especially as any delay in a bid could mean United lose out as Chelsea are also interested in the 22-year-old.
Former manager Carlo Ancelotti reportedly tabled a bid in the last January transfer window, but whether Andre Villas-Boas is planning an increased offer is unknown.
Subotic had also been linked with a move to Roma but this deal was quashed buy the players’ agent earlier this year.
Stephan Kelly told the International Business Times: “This news is new to me. Roma had spoken in the past but at present there is nothing at all.”
“Roma is not in the thoughts of Neven and we have not had relations with them. He will not leave Borussia Dortmund. It is a story without foundation.”
Ferguson’s other centre-back options include Chris Smalling, Jonny Evans, Rio Ferdinand and Phil
But Ferdinand may not be able to last a whole season as he has his own injury problems and given the lack of central midfielders due to the loss of Darren Fletcher and Anderson, Jones had been playing in midfield of late.
Subotic has previously stated his desire to play in England: “A dream of mine is still to play in the Premiership. One day in the future, I want to try myself out in that competition.”
Ironically Vidic has been a long admirer of him and has touted his countryman as a player Ferguson should invest in, it could be his own injury that makes Subotic’s move to Manchester all the more likely.
