Willian has recently been linked with Chelsea, but it seems that, with Andrey Arshavin heavily tipped to leave North london in the summer, Wenger now has his sights set on the tricky South American as a ready-made replacement. The 22-year-old Brazilian, who can play as an attacking midfielder or as a winger, has produced some eye-catching performances for the Ukranian champions this season, helping the big-spending Eastern Europeans to the Champions League quarter-finals, where they lost 5-1 in the first leg to overwhelming favourites, Barcelona.
Willian started his career ar Brazilian giants, Corinthians in 2006, where he made just 37 appearances before Shakhtar weighed in with a hefty €19million bid for the tricky winger, who was just 18 when he moved to the Ukraine.
The slight Brazilian, who is just 5’8″, has earned a reputation for a flowing style of play; he is comfortable playing with either foot, and his pacy dribbling style and positional play mean he often finds himself in goal-scoring situations, helping to explain his decent return of more than a goal every 7 games from the wing.
Former team-mates at junior level for Brazil, Arsenal’s midfielder Denilson is certain that Willian would be right at home at the Emirates according to our friends at Tuttomercatoweb.com,
“I heard that Chelsea is interested in him, but I think his character could really improve our team. Willian has the perfect mindset for Arsenal. I met him in the U-17 national squad and I know that his winning mentality could really help us. I think his style would fit much better with Arsenal because of the way we play football. He has great vision and technique. I think he’s one of the most creative players I’ve ever played with. “
It remains to be seen if Arsene Wenger will make an official bid for Willian, who will cost somewhere in the region of €22million, as his arrival may depend on the departure of Arshavin, but if Denilson has his way, his Brazilian team-mate could well be winging his way to the Emirates in a few months time.
