Recent reports in France suggest that Jose Enrique could be on his way to Lyon. The Newcastle defender has previously been linked with Liverpool after impressing in the Premier League this season. It has now emerged that Olympique Lyonnais might be the frontrunners in the chase for the Spaniards signature.
Lyon boss, Claude Puel is keen to bring the left-back in as a ready-made replacement for Aly Cissokho, who is expected to leave this summer with reported interest from Inter Milan. Enrique would be tempted by the prospect of moving across the channel with the appeal of Champions League being a great incentive.
Liverpool look as if they will now struggle to even qualify for the Europe League, leaving Lyon as the most appealing offer available. Newcastle seem resigned to losing their star left-back as he searches to establish himself at the highest level in an attempt to force his way into the Spanish international set up. With the left-back position being one of the few problems for the Spanish national side, Enrique is determined to make the position his and believes Champions League football would be the best way to gain his first cap.
Enrique has become a fan favourite at St. James’ Park after the club’s impressive first season back in the Premier League giving him the price tag of €7m. With a lot of money in French football it would be a suitable price for both parties concerned as Newcastle look to rejuvenate their squad this summer. With the Geordies looking to do business this summer then the interest in the Spaniard may spark off a bidding war welcomed by the club.
Even if Liverpool do come knocking this summer, it looks as though Enrique could be opting for Lyon and the chance to play Champions League football.
