The Man Utd fans in the Transfer Tavern are loving life under Jose Mourinho. The Red Devils are clearly a team on the up, and with the experienced Portuguese in charge, it’s fair to say that good times are coming to Old Trafford.
However, given that Mourinho is still yet to win one of the main trophies – notably the Premier League – it would be easy for the Red Devils to consider replacing him as Ed Woodward and co seek to regain their crown in England. Woodward, though, seemingly has a different idea – with the Independent reporting that Mourinho will be backed to the hilt at Old Trafford – with any player that doesn’t meet his standards, including Paul Pogba, in with a chance of being shifted out this summer and beyond.
It’s a refreshing and unique stance from the Man Utd boss, and our landlord thinks that it’s a stance that deserves to be lauded.
After all, for too long, player power has dominated the top sides in the Premier League. It’s perhaps most evident at Chelsea, and Mourinho felt the effects of it first hand. Too often, long-standing players have had the ability to take control of the dressing room, and in some cases, they have had a hand in the sacking of managers. That isn’t the way it should be, given that managers should be the ones in command. It appears as though Man Utd are reverting back to that, and that can only be a good thing.
Woodward’s decision also suggests that Man Utd are willing to be patient. It would be easy to sack him, having yet to win the Premier League, but instead, the club appears to be in it for the long haul. Any players that feel as though progress isn’t being made will be shipped out, with any and all resources being directed towards Mourinho and his wants.
We’ve seen in the past, again at Chelsea, that the constant changing of managers can generate short-term success, but Man Utd are clearly on the hunt for long-term success. In Mourinho, they have a manager that will be able to deliver that – and Woodward is now giving him the tools to achieve that, and he deserves so much credit for taking the stance that he has.
