Lille midfielder Eden Hazard has admitted that he may join Tottenham in the summer, according to numerous recycled reports.
21-year-old Hazard is one of Europe’s most coveted talents and attracted the attention of Arsenal during the close season but a move to the Emirates did not materialise. The player has previously expressed his preference for a move to the Premier League, although he would also consider a move to either Barcelona or Real Madrid.
Hazard praised Tottenham as a “great English club” but also suggested that his style of play may be better suited to La Liga. This could suggest that his words are only a precursor to a summer auction in which the Spanish giants compete with England’s finest for his signature.
Belgian international Hazard has played for Lille in France since signing his first professional contract and making his debut as a 16-year-old in 2007. He has made a total of 176 appearances for the club, scoring 39 goals.
He helped Lille achieve the domestic league and cup double in 2010-11 and became the youngest player to win the UNFP Ligue 1 Player of the Year award. He is a fixture in the Belgian side which failed to qualify for the Euro 2012 finals.
Hazard’s interview doing the rounds is difficult to interpret as much more than a device to drum up interest. Chelsea have scouted him extensively. Arsenal were linked with him.
The reality is that player will neither be cheap to land nor remunerate and so it is clear that potential suitors are being encouraged. If they weren’t, then why doesn’t he just make a specific statement of intent? Maybes are really not much cop here among the grown ups.
