The Manchester City fans in the Transfer Tavern are expecting Pep Guardiola to sign a new central midfielder, a winger and potentially a left-back this summer, but recent reports suggest he is tempted by one of the finest goalkeepers in footballing history.
According to reports in The Sun, Liverpool are lining up a move for Gianluigi Buffon this summer with concerns over Lorius Karius continuing to loom large at Anfield, but they will face competition from Manchester City for his signature. Considering Claudio Bravo has consistently proven to be a liability between the sticks for the Citizens, it’s no surprise that Guardiola is enticed by the prospect of signing Buffon.
Buffon is set to leave Juventus this summer after a 17-year spell with the club in which he has won 9 Serie A titles, the Ballon d’Or, the World Cup and even experienced relegation. In terms of achievements, Buffon has accomplished just about everything in the game, other than a Champions League victory.
With that in mind, Buffon could be tempted by a move to Manchester City this summer, as it seems they are on the cusp of lifting Europe’s most prestigious trophy. The presence of Ederson could prove to be a stumbling block in negotiations as the Brazilian has deservedly stamped his mark on the number one shirt at City, however, the Italian might just be up for one more challenge in his career, even at 40-years-of-age.
Besides, with a history like Buffon’s, he is perfectly within his rights to believe he is capable of taking Ederson’s place in City’s first-team next season. If he eventually agrees to sign for the Premier League champions, Ederson will need to step up another level next season as, unlike Bravo, Buffon will provide serious competition for a place in the starting eleven.
Guardiola is a manger who strives for perfection and pushes his players to reach their maximum level. With Bravo beneath him in the pecking order, it’s likely that Ederson has been able to relax somewhat this season, but that dynamic would change dramatically following Buffon’s arrival.
If City are to improve on their previous double-winning campaign then they will need to add no more than three quality additions to their squad this summer, and if they begin their window by signing Buffon, Ederson’s seemingly untouchable status will come under serious threat next season.
