The summer transfer window will offer Manuel Pellegrini the perfect opportunity to reevaluate the squad he has available to him and make the changes he deems necessary to improve upon the previous campaign.
However, it appears he may have to make a decision regarding one player that may have originally been out of his hands at one stage.
What’s the News?
According to a report by Corriere dello Sport (via Sport Witness), it is believed that Edimilson Fernandes will be returning to the Premier League outfit following his loan spell at Fiorentina.
The Italian newspaper is claiming that the Serie A outfit will not take up the €9million (£7.7m) option to make his stay permanent and will look to use the money on improving their squad elsewhere.
With the news that Fiorentina are unlikely to sign Fernandes on a permanent deal in the summer, it could mean that Pellegrini has a decision on his hands about what to do with the 22-year-old.
He could look to keep the Switzerland international, however, he has never really shone during his time with the club and it is unlikely that he would get a chance to do so in the future with so many options currently available to the Hammers in that position.
West Ham would have done well to get £7.7m for the player and that could have been money that could have been used to strengthen other areas of the pitch in the summer.
However, all might not be lost, as recent reports from France have suggested that Olympique de Lyonnais could be in the market for Fernandes, should they lose Tanguy Ndombele.
Whether the Irons would be able to scoop up the same amount of money they have potentially lost out on from the Italian side would remain to be seen, however, cashing in on the midfielder is probably the best thing for both the club and the player.
