The 28 year old Swede has failed to live up to his hefty £8m price tag since joining the Trotters in July 2008 and now finds himself out of favour especially with Ivan Klasnic’s form.
Although scoring 5 goals in his first season, all came before December as he went on a 9 month goal drought which ended in September 2009 with a goal against West Ham in the Carling Cup. Elamnder would then end an 11 month league goal drought as he scored Bolton’s only goal in a 5-1 defeat to Aston Villa and thus far he has 3 goals in 12 appearances.
Hamburg have been linked with a number of strikers including Portsmouth’s John Utaka as they seek a stand in for long term absentee, Paolo Guerrero but it is believed they have settled on Bolton’s Elmander especially as it is unlike that Elmander will figure in new manager Owen Coyle’s plans.
It remains to be seen if Hamburg has the financial clout to bring Elmander to Germany so they could be seeking to take him on loan until the end of the season. Elmander’s contract expire in 2011 and if he impresses in Germany it is though Hamburg will look to make the move permanent closer to the expiration of his contract.
