Emery’s smartest Arsenal decision thus far would be a move for £22.5m-rated midfielder

Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern are excited about the club’s future now that Unai Emery has been announced as Arsene Wenger’s successor.

The Gunners were disappointing during Wenger’s final season in charge, managing only a sixth-place finish in the Premier League and a semi-final exit from the Europa League at the hands of Atletico Madrid. So, Emery has a massive task on his hands if he is to return Arsenal to the top of the Premier League, that’s for sure. Starting with the summer transfer window, new signings are a must if he’s going to hit the ground running.

They are on the verge of completing their first summer deal with Borussia Dortmund defender, Sokratis Papastathopoulos, set to move to North London in a deal worth around £16m. Still, their summer spending must continue if the Gunners are to challenge Manchester City next season. Indeed, Midfield will also be an area of concern with Jack Wilshere and Aaron Ramsey yet to pen long-term contracts with the club.

An excellent signing for Emery would be Sampdoria midfielder – Lucas Torreira. Valued at £22.5m by Transfermarkt, the Uruguayan has been one of the top performers in the Serie A this season which earned him a spot in their World Cup squad for Russia. He made 36 appearances, scoring four goals for his side.

The 22-year-old is the ideal box-to-box midfielder, averaging 2 interceptions and 2.8 tackles per game according to WhoScored. He would add some much-needed steel in the Arsenal engine room and allow the likes of Mesut Ozil to flourish ahead of him.

Torreira is still developing and could turn into a world-class star in the Premier League.

Arsenal fans, thoughts?
