Rafael Benitez could return to the transfer market for another striker in January.
The Magpies are 19th in the Premier League with just two points from their opening eight fixtures. Benitez made signing a striker his number one priority in the summer but had to settle on the loan addition of Salomon Rondon from West Brom. As part of the deal, Dwight Gayle joined the Baggies on a temporary basis.
Their fortunes couldn’t be more different with Rondon yet to score on Tyneside while Gayle has been scoring for fun in the Championship. Indeed, the Newcastle players need to do more to get the Venezuela international into the game, but his lack of goals will definitely be concerning. If Newcastle are to avoid relegation, the former Liverpool boss should try to sign another top forward in the January window.
One man who should be on his shortlist is Nantes hitman – Emiliano Sala. Valued at £10.8m by Transfermarkt, the Argentine has been a regular goalscorer in Ligue 1 since joining the club from Bordeaux back in 2015. Sala hit 12 goals in two consecutive seasons and has made a great start to the new campaign with four goals in just six starts.
The 27-year-old has flourished in a struggling side and could take his game to the next level surrounded by better players at St. James Park. Sala has proven he can provide goals and be a constant threat in attack. He is yet to extend his contract with the club and performing well in the Premier League could see him push for his first call-up to the senior Argentina team.
Previously of interest to Watford according to reports, Newcastle must make sure they are first in line for his signature.
