Arsene Wenger has finally acknowledged what many of us have known for a long time, and that is the fact that Denilson isn’t overly good and isn’t going to live up to the potential that many people thought he possessed.
Instead of the hapless Brazilian, Arsenal are planning a swap deal for an altogether better one, the midfielder in question is Felipe Melo.
To suggest that Melo is somewhat nomadic in football terms would be an understatement, the 27 year old, whilst maybe not in the same league as Trevor Benjamin when it comes to different clubs, has still managed to rack up 8 different teams since he made his debut for Flamengo in 2001.
In Brazil the holding midfielder played for Flamengo, Cruzeiro, Gremio before moving to Europe and playing in Spain for Mallorca, Racing Santander and Almeria, it was then time to pack his bags again and jet off to Italy to play for Fiorentina and his current club Juventus.
It was his time with Fiorentina where he really started to demonstrate his abilities, around the time of his move to Juve there were numerous reports linking him with Arsenal but these never came to anything, the deal taking him to Juventus was thought to be around £21 million, a pretty good piece of business for Fiorentina, considering they only paid £11million for the Brazilian.
The fiery midfielder is very combative and does the shielding job for Brazil, the new Gilberto Silva? Well maybe not exactly, but still an excellent player. When he gets settled into a team his passion and work rate make him a great anchor in the midfield and that for me is something that Arsenal have missed at various times. They have tried to get players to do that and in the case of Denilson, firstly he isn’t that sort of player, and second he isn’t even that good-er player. Alex Song looks a very good player in the midfield but I feel he is somewhat wasted in that role, Melo would definitely fill a gap in the Arsenal team for me.
Juventus is probably the right level for Denilson so a swap deal would be excellent for both parties. Melo I think would be a good player in the Premier League and there is the suggestion that any deal wouldn’t involve piles of money, so what could be better than that? Arsenal have been long term admirers of the player and this is a deal that I can see going through this Summer, and I think it would be great for the Emirates side.
