Newcastle United fans have been reasonably buoyant in the Transfer Tavern during the international break following their side’s solid start to the Premier League season.
Rafa Benitez’s men have won three of their opening seven matches to sit ninth in the table, with their 1-1 draw at home to Liverpool last time out indicative of the progress they are making under the former Chelsea and Real Madrid boss.
And several of our resident Magpies supporters have been singing the praises of the Spaniard so far this season, and there may be more good news to come if a recent report from The Sunday People (via The Chronicle) is anything to go by.
And that’s because they report that the North East giants are lining up a January move for Slavia Prague defender Jakub Jugas.
The 25-year-old only moved to the Czech capital earlier this year following a long association with FC Fastav Zlin, for whom he appeared 108 times and scored five goals.
And his fine form for the top tier side earned him a move to Slavia Prague, where he has since played 15 games to help them to third place in the Czech First League after nine games of the season, and indeed to four points from their opening two Europa League group stage clashes.
And it appears that his fine form for the Czech champions has attracted the interest of Benitez and Newcastle, who have reportedly seen him on multiple occasions already this season ahead of a possible January move.
They could face a fight from Bundesliga and Serie A teams though, but the lure of Premier League football may be too much to turn down should the Magpies firm up their interest in January.
Landlord’s verdict: Newcastle United struggled throughout the summer to land several transfer targets, and manager Rafa Benitez made his frustrations clear on numerous occasions.
They have started the season well though to suggest that the players are there to keep the Magpies in the Premier League, yet some areas may well need strengthening in January to deal with the demands of the second half of the season.
Centre-back isn’t necessarily one department that jumps out though, which is why reports that they are keeping tabs on Slavia Prague’s Jakub Jugas may come as a slight surprise.
Nonetheless, the 25-year-old is highly-rated in his homeland and would certainly bolster Newcastle’s ranks, but whether they indeed firm up their interest in January with a bid remains to be seen.
