Punters in the Transfer Tavern this evening have been gearing up to a busy few days in front of the television watching the international action and have been debating whether the words of an England legend ring true.
David Beckham, an iconic footballer from an era where England were blessed with top talent, believes Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has the capabilities to drop into a deeper role in midfield as he ages.
Louis Van Gaal used Rooney in a midfield role last term and Beckham, speaking at a UNICEF event at Old Trafford, backed England’s record goalscorer to follow the path of Ryan Giggs.
‘I think when you get older, you have to adapt your play. Ryan Giggs was a prime example. He got to a certain age and then he dropped into midfield a lot more and played that central role. I think Wayne will do the same.’
‘He’s an out-and-out goalscorer, but I think at the end of the day with Wayne, he’s proved he can step into the midfield and play. If you’re comfortable on the ball, as players such as Wayne and Giggsy are you can do that.’
Our regulars are debating whether this is the case and whether this would be good for England, who are currently blessed with a wealth of young talent up-front but their playing time is limited due to Rooney’s involvement.
Manchester United fans, is Rooney in a midfield role something you’d like to see in the future? Let us know below in the comments!
