The former Netherlands manager is still on the hunt for his first competitive win at the club and has warned fans that it could be more than three months until his players gel.
He is clearly looking at Manchester United’s long-term future rather than targeting instant success which is what more clubs should be doing.
And according to talkSPORT, he is planning a raid on Ajax for 16-year-old defender Timothy Fosu Mensah as he tries to strengthen the Red Devils long-term.
Reports suggest that the highly-rated teen talent was at the club’s Carrington training ground yesterday to undergo a medical ahead of a move.
The deal is expected to cost the Red Devils and initial £300,000 and comes as a boost to morale having beaten Manchester City and Inter Milan to his signature.
Mensah will become the club’s fifth signing this summer and can play at centre back, left back and as a defensive midfielder meaning he is well suited to van Gaal’s formation plans.
