It would be safe to say Erik Lamela’s Tottenham Hotspur career has blown hot and cold.
A lot was expected of the Argentina international when he initially joined from AS Roma in 2013 for a reported fee of £25.7million, however, he has really failed to make the kind of impact Spurs would have been looking for.
And, it appears the curtain may be coming down on his six-year spell in north London this summer.
What’s the News?
Lamela may have already played his last match for Tottenham and his employers are ready to cut ties, according to Football Insider.
They claim that the Argentine’s latest injury setback may have cost him any chance of proving to Mauricio Pochettino that he should stay with Spurs, as his manager has doubts about whether the 27-year-old can handle the demands the club will face moving forward because playing in two matches a week looks extremely unlikely at the moment.
Tottenham fans will surely feel for Lamela as things really have not gone as planned for the playmaker during his spell with the club. The Argentine is extremely capable of putting in some rather impressive performances, however, they have been few and far between.
Lamela has been plagued during his time in England and the doubts about whether the 27-year-old can play two matches a week are reasonable, especially considering the fact that Spurs are continuing their efforts in trying to obtain silverware.
Because of his nightmares with injury, he has found himself well down the pecking order in north London, with Heung-min Son and Lucas Moura both in front of him. When he is given the opportunity to play, it has usually been as a substitute, rather than in a starting role.
However, whether he has played his last game for Tottenham may have to remain to be seen, as that would depend on whether the club will be in a position to successfully offload him should they look to do so.
With his injury problems, Lamela could be seen as a risky acquisition for a number of sides and the clubs that would be able to potentially afford to take him off of Spurs’ hands will also likely be playing two matches a week.
Tottenham fans, do you think the club will look to offload Lamela this summer? Do you think you have seen the last of him in a Spurs shirt? Join in with the discussion below by sharing your thoughts with us.
