We here in the Football Transfer Tavern are intrigued with reports from Russia that the billionaire-backed Anzhi Makhachkala are slashing their budget and are willing to sell their top players.
Owner Suleiman Kerimov has reportedly grown frustrated with the Dagestan club’s lack of progress and has responded by drastically cutting their financial lifeline which could see all of the stars that have been recruited on massive wages being made available for sale.
The Express now report that Chelsea could move for striker Samuel Eto’o and attacking midfielder Willian after the entire squad was put up for sale as they look to cut their budget by almost £50 million a year.
And Jose Mourinho could move for Eto’o ,who he managed before at Inter Milan, as he seeks a top-class striker this summer.
The transfer saga over Wayne Rooney’s possible move to Stamford Bridge shows no signs of ending with Manchester United unwilling to sell and that could see the Blues targeting a cheap move for the Cameroon international. Although whether the Stamford Bridge club would be able to match his current £350,000-a-week wages remains to be seen.
Chelsea were strongly linked with a swoop for Willian before he joined Anzhi in a £30 million deal from Shakhtar Donetsk and it looks as if they could revive their interest in the exciting attacking midfielder with the Russian club desperate to sell.
Anzhi’s president Konstantin Remchukov said on Twitter: “The main news is that Anzhi will undergo a reformatting.
“Many of our expensive stars will leave Anzhi, while the club’s budget will be decreased to $50-$70 million (£32.5-£45.5m) a year.
“We failed to clinch rapid success. Now Anzhi will develop its academy according to the medium-term plans of club development.”
