Manchester United fans in the Transfer Tavern have seen their hopes of landing a quality central-defender suffer a heavy blow, after it became apparent their not the only side pursuing his signature.
The Daily Express, citing reports from Spanish outlet Sport, state Barcelona are determined to beat Manchester United in the hunt for Villarreal defender Mateo Musacchio, who the Catalan side previously tried to sign in 2013.
United boss Louis Van Gaal had made the Argentine defender, who’s set to feature in this summer’s Olympic tournament in Rio, as one of his prime targets after Mats Hummels secured a move to Bayern Munich.
However, Barcelona want the 25-year-old as the long-term partner to Gerard Pique, with Javier Mascherano reaching the end of his career, and reports state they’re closing in on a deal to sign Musacchio.
Manchester United’s potential lack of Champions League football may be deemed as decisive in the club missing out, as both Villarreal and Barcelona have secured their place in next season’s tournament.
