Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern had been hoping for a busy summer, as they pray for a world class striker to land at their club, but the latest report has seemingly crossed two targets of their short-list.
German publication Bild states Real Madrid are ready to blow Arsenal, and any other Premier League side, out of the water in the chase for Borussia Dortmund ace Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang by offering a player-plus-cash deal.
Gabonese international Aubameyang has caught headlines throughout Europe this season with his quality performances for Dortmund, having scored 32 goals in 36 appearances for the German giants this season.
Those displays have put him at the top of the wish-list for many European clubs this summer but Real Madrid, who are expected to complete a major squad overhaul this summer, are ready to storm to the front of the queue with an offer of £54.9m.
Whilst that in itself is bad news for Arsenal, who have eyed the player, the second part of Real Madrid’s offer could be the most condemning, as it’s suggest Los Blancos will offer Alvaro Morata as a sweetener to the deal.
Real Madrid retain a buy-back clause for the Juventus forward and will likely exercise that option this summer and by offering the Spaniard to Dortmund, the German side will get a hefty cash investment and a quality replacement rolled up in one deal.
It’s a hammer blow to Arsenal, who have long held interest in Morata’s signature, and it would quickly rule out a move for two of their summer targets this summer. Whilst Aubameyang always seemed unlikely, Morata was definitely within the realms of possibility.
