Everton’s Idrissa Gana Gueye was the subject of a lot of interest from Paris Saint-Germain during the January transfer window.
It was understood that the French giants had made several bids to try and convince The Toffees to sell him to them, although the Premier League outfit stood firm over their Senegal international ace.
However, according to fresh claims in France, it appears they had already agreed to a deal for a replacement, should a move have come to fruition.
La Voix Du Nord have stated that Everton had made an agreement with LOSC Lille about a swoop for Thiago Mendes.
It is claimed the Ligue One outfit had accepted to terms of a deal worth 23million plus bonuses for the Brazilian midfielder.
However, as Everton decided to block the move of Gueye to PSG, a move for Mendes broke down and he subsequently stayed with Lille.
There is no doubt that Everton would have wanted to keep a player like Gueye on their books at the club, however, news that Mendes was thrown into the mix is rather intriguing.
The Brazilian midfielder has been in fine form for Lille this season and has played an integral part in how well the club is performing.
The deal worth around 23m plus bonuses could have been an excellent investment in the 26-year-old, especially with Gueye approaching his 30s, however, it will now be a case of ‘ifs and buts’ for those at Goodison Park.
