Everton fans in the Transfer Tavern are shocked to hear claims that a boyhood hero of there’s could return to Merseyside before the start of the 2016/17 season.
Despite the fact that bookmakers are backing Rooney to still be at Old Trafford next season, they are far from convinced with odds of 1/5.
The 30-year old joined Manchester United from the Toffees in 2004 for a fee of £26m and signed a £300,000-a-week contract extension back in 2014, just one year on from submitting a transfer request.
Since then, the Manchester United striker has become the Premier League’s second highest scorer and England’s all-time top scorer.
It is believed that it would take a hefty transfer fee to persuade the Red Devils into selling their captain, which may discourage Everton from making a move.
However, monetary value is unlikely to daunt the favourites to acquire Rooney’s services, Chelsea, who currently stand at 7/1. Heavily backed French outfit Paris-Saint Germain follow just behind the two Premier League clubs at 10/1.
SkyBet are also offering 10/1 for Rooney to join any Chinese Super League team – which could potentially see him reunited with the manager who rewarded him with his first international cap – Sven-Goran Eriksson, who has been at the helm of Shanghai SIPG FC since 2014.
The Daily Mail also reported last month that Rooney was offered £25 million a year to join his former coach in Asia.
