Everton and Newcastle United fans have been in contrasting moods in the Transfer Tavern during the international break such have been their sides’ starts to the season.
Ronald Koeman’s Toffees have managed just two wins from their opening seven Premier League matches and thus sit 16th in the division, which is seven places below Rafa Benitez’s Magpies, whose three victories have them comfortably sat in mid-table.
Both teams will hope to get back to winning ways when the league resumes this weekend, but supporters from the Premier League duo are unlikely to be overly thrilled by a recent report from AD (via talkSPORT), which details some intriguing quotes from Sporting Lisbon striker Bas Dost, a target of the two sides.
The 28-year-old moved to the Portuguese capital back in 2016 and embarked on a scintillating campaign last time out, netting 34 goals in just 31 league games for the club to help them to a third place finish in the Primeira Liga.
And with four goals in eight league games already this term, the Dutch international doesn’t appear to be letting up, and it’s form which has attracted the interest of Koeman’s Everton and Benitez’s Newcastle in recent times.
However, Dost himself has quashed any rumours linking him with a move away in January, saying: ‘I’m not waiting for a winter transfer at all.
‘I’m excited at Sporting and I want to be a champion here. I’m not leaving in the winter break.’
And these comments are sure to strike a significant blow in the transfer plans of both Koeman and Benitez, with it clear that both sides are lacking sufficient depth in the striking department having bagged just 11 goals between them so far in the Premier League.
But it looks like they’ll have to turn their attentions away from the 28-year-old in January.
Landlord’s verdict: Everton’s tally of four Premier League goals and Newcastle’s seven are among the lowest in the top-flight this term, and thus reinforcements will be needed in January to combat those shortcomings.
And one man both sides were interested in was Sporting Lisbon’s Bas Dost, scorer of 41 goals in just 53 games for the Portuguese heavyweights, including 34 in 31 Primeira Liga games last term.
However, the man himself has categorically ruled out a move away during the winter to put a severe dent in the Premier League duo’s transfer plans, in news which is sure to frustrate both Ronald Koeman and Rafa Benitez.
And now both sides will have to turn their attentions to other striking targets ahead of the reopening of the window in January.
