With West Ham and Everton both beginning to pick up over the last few weeks with new managers at the helm, there’s a genuine sense of optimism from both clubs now that the season won’t turn into a relegation struggle.
The Hammers picked up a crucial point in midweek against Arsenal, while Everton battled to a hard fought win over Newcastle United to continue their good run.
With January just around the corner, both clubs are bound to be wanting to add new faces to the ranks, and our landlord here at the Tavern thinks both clubs could well become embroiled in a bidding war for one of the Premier League’s outstanding defenders.
That defender? Burnley man James Tarkowski.
The former Brentford man has been in excellent form since getting his chance following the sale of Michael Keane in the summer, and he is showing the sort of form which convinced the Clarets to part with their cash for him a couple of seasons back.
However, despite Burnley’s lofty league position, the likes of Everton and the Hammers are big names in the top flight, capable of paying big wages, and should either of those clubs move for Tarkowski, he would find it hard to turn down a move.
He’s big, good on the ball, and most of all, puts defending first, something which is a rarity in many modern central defenders nowadays. Tarkowski would be an excellent capture, and could cement his place as one of the league’s best with a move to either club.
