Roberto Martinez has raised an interesting point and got a lively debate going in the Transfer Tavern, as the Everton boss has claimed that his defender and captain Phil Jagielka has been the best English defender over the past year.
This has obviously split opinion around the pool table with many arguing against his point.
Speaking after the 1-1 draw in the Merseyside derby, Martinez praised Jagielka and said ‘It’s about time he (Jagielka) gets the credit he deserves’. The Liverpool Echo also quotes Martinez as saying:
“In my eyes he has been the most consistent and best English centre half we have had in the last 12 months.”
“It is no coincidence anyone who plays alongside him performs. Anyone who plays in that back four is given the opportunity to express themselves and allowed to be effective and that’s down to Phil Jagielka.”
Jagielka’s defensive partner John Stones has been linked heavily with a move to Everton’s Premier League rivals Chelsea but did not feature in the game with Liverpool yesterday. Ramiro Funes Mori played alongside Jagielka and, for the most par, kept the Liverpool forward line in check.
Martinez’s comments will certainly divide opinion, with Chelsea fans arguing that both John Terry and Gary Cahill have been better than Jagielka over the past 12 months as they led the Blues to the Premier League title.
