Everton supporters in the Football Transfer Tavern are all hoping the club manage to keep a hold of John Stones before the close of the transfer window, and Roberto Martinez has had his say on the Chelsea target once again.
The Toffees have rejected two bids from Chelsea for the England international defender, the second of which was thought to be at £26million.
The reigning Premier League champions are set to return with an offer of £30million before the close of the transfer window according to reports, and Martinez reckons his side would be allowed to simply focus on the start of the season if the transfer point had already been cut off.
Martinez – filling in for Gary Neville on Sky Sports Monday Night Football – said: ‘The window, when it’s open and you have to prepare official games, is very, very unfair. I don’t think it’s right.
‘I think we should be just having a period where you can assemble your squad, then once the first league game starts, everyone is focused.
‘I think we’re forgetting footballers have a human side and that really can affect [them]. The other side is we are the ones that in a brave approach are giving young players opportunities.
‘Players like John Stones and Ross Barkley have an incredible future, and these players are going to attract interest from the outside.
‘As a football club, these players are going to be part of our success in the future.’
A group of Everton fans here inside the Football Transfer Tavern are praying that the club can keep hold of John Stones this window, but if they are offered anything upwards of £30 million, then it definitely has to be considered.
