There have been some raised voices and raised eyebrows around the Transfer Tavern today, particularly amongst our Everton contingent, after sensational claims from their manager.
The Daily Telegraph quoted Toffees boss Roberto Martinez as calling Tom Cleverley the ‘best English player’, which earned a fair few chuckles in the bar.
During the Toffees’ 3-0 win over Stoke at the weekend, the Englishman earned the penalty which put his side 1-0 up and swung in the corner for his side’s second.
Following the game, Spanish coach Martinez claimed that Cleverley has never been better and could get even better. He said:
“I think he can go even further,”
“I think you do not have a better English player. Technically, he is as good as you get. The way he executes, how he reads the game, for me he is one of the most sensational you are going to see in Premier League history.
With England boasting the likes of Wayne Rooney, Jamie Vardy and Harry Kane, the claims from Martinez are certainly controversial.
Our landlord has been particularly tickled by these comments, as he doesn’t feel Cleverley is even the best England international at Everton!
