Everton are the latest Premier League side to be linked with a move to sign Inter midfielder Christian Eriksen in the January transfer window.
It was recently reported that Wolves have not held any talks to sign Eriksen despite some earlier links. Sky Italia stated that while Ajax and Wolves were in contact with the player’s agents, no bid has been made yet. And now, Everton have been thrown into the mix for the former Tottenham star.
Everton could compete for Eriksen
The print edition of Italian outlet La Stampa (via SempreInter) has stated that Inter could let Eriksen leave on a temporary basis in January, if the buying club is able to cover the midfielder’s salary for that period. The report goes on to state that Everton have made an enquiry for the Dane and so have Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal.
Would Eriksen be the perfect fit for Everton?
Journalist Fabrizio Romano also linked Eriksen with a move to Paris Saint-Germain – the number of clubs that have been linked with him suggests that Eriksen is a wanted man.
The 28-year-old had left Tottenham in January 2020 to join Antonio Conte’s Nerazzurri side, but he has made only 12 appearances in all competitions under the Italian this season and is yet to score or assist for the Serie A giants.
During his time at Spurs, Eriksen was praised by Pochettino after a Champions League game against Inter’s rivals, Juventus. He said: “I think Christian had an amazing game. He was outstanding. He was fantastic. Christian is doing, in my few years, always an important player for us. He always steps up and I think he’s this type of player who represents our philosophy.”
Worry for Sigurdsson
During his time at Spurs, Eriksen had scored 51 top flight goals and added a remarkable 66 assists. While those are excellent numbers, Everton currently have James Rodriguez for the playmaker role. Because of that, Eriksen may find it tough to get the regular starting place he desires.
However, The Toffees don’t have many creative options after Rodriguez if he were to pick up another injury – given the criticism of Gylfi Sigurdsson from large sections of the Goodison faithful – so perhaps the Dane can surpass the Iceland international in the pecking order.
