Everton boss Roberto Martinez has impressed the Transfer Tavern over the years and is set to do so again this season as he looks to sign Manchester City midfielder Gareth Barry in the coming days, according to the Express.
Barry has not featured much for City in pre-season and wasn’t even included in their squad for their final game of the summer against Arsenal last weekend.
With new City boss Manuel Pellegrini bringing in more midfield options, it appears Barry’s time at the Etihad is up and a move to Everton could be the perfect tonic for the former Aston Villa man to rebuild his career.
With the World Cup in Brazil less than 12 months away, players such as Barry will now know that they need to play regular first team football to impress boss Roy Hodgson and to book their ticket to South America next year.
The likes of Tom Huddlestone, Andy Carroll and Stewart Downing have already taken a step down in order to have a chance at making it to Brazil and Barry, along with City team mate Scott Sinclair, is set to follow suit.
Everton are keen to take the holding midfielder on loan this summer but his £90,000 a week wages are the only stumbling block.
Barry is now fifth choice central midfielder at the Etihad and would surely walk straight into the Toffees midfield so it appears to be a no brainer for the 32 year old who is entering the final year of his big money contract at City.
