Everton have needed a proven goalscorer for what seems like forever, but they might have just found the man to end fans’ sorrows in Danny Welbeck.
The Arsenal man’s last couple of seasons have been plagued by injury but he’s still got the eye for goal he had when Arsene Wenger brought him to the Emirates in 2014. He could find his feet again at Goodison Park next season.
The Evening Standard have reported that Everton are in pole position to secure his signature when his contract runs out this summer, and it’s a gamble that Marcel Brands is right to take, considering how he can play when he’s fully fit.
Cenk Tosun has been nowhere near good enough for a club with Everton’s aspirations and Welbeck’s entrance will hopefully see the back of him. It could also raise Bernard’s game, who would benefit massively from his presence up top.
The England international scored a hat-trick in a recent friendly so it’s clear he’s still got it, and at 28-years-old he’s got plenty of time to make up for the period he’s been on the sidelines. He’s never been the main man at previous clubs but he could finally secure the number nine shirt at Everton.
This responsibility might take him to new levels and see him finally reach the potential Sir Alex Ferguson saw in him. Indeed, he could be the man to give the Goodison faithful what they’ve been wanting since Romelu Lukaku’s departure in 2017. Consistent goals, that’d be nice, wouldn’t it?
