Going into this season, Marco Silva identified central defence as the area of Everton’s squad that needed tending to the most.
The likes of Ashley Williams — now at Stoke City — and Phil Jagielka have declined significantly in the last couple of years, while Michael Keane has been unable to replicate the sort of form he showed with previous club Burnley at Goodison Park.
As a result, Silva decided to add Yerry Mina and Kurt Zouma to his squad, two physically imposing centre-halves in an attempt to bolster the Toffees’ frail backline.
Mina, who arrived for big money from Barcelona, however, has yet to feature because of injury, much to the disappointment of supporters.
Zouma, on the other hand, has managed to make an instant impact and after an array of promising defensive displays, Transfer Tavern has since spotted plenty of Everton fans on Twitter calling for the club to sign the Frenchman from Chelsea permanently.
Given how £18m-rated (via Transfermarkt) Zouma has played in recent weeks and the attributes he possesses, it is not surprising that Everton fans want to see the 24-year-old remain at Goodison Park beyond his current loan spell.
As well as being aerially dominant, Zouma is quick and a very strong tackler. All in all, he has most of the tools needed to play for Silva, a manager who is adamant on deploying a high defensive line.
With that in mind, Everton must fulfil the wishes of their supporters and do all they can to sign Zouma permanently.
