Marco Silva enjoyed a thoroughly productive transfer window as he welcomed 6 new players to the club before the deadline, and he continued to wheel and deal in the market earlier this week by sanctioning the departure of Mo Besic.
Indeed, Besic has rejoined Middlesbrough on a season-long loan deal after impressing with the club during his short-term deal in the second half of last season. In a midfield anchor role Besic managed to make 15 appearances for the club, providing a single goal and an assist in the process.
And the quality of his form was enough to convince Tony Pulis to bring him back to the Riverside Stadium for a longer stint. Although Besic’s career at Everton has been tarnished by injuries and a subsequent struggle for first-team opportunities, there were plenty of supporters who were disappointed to see him depart.
In response his season-long loan deal, our very own Marcus Oades delved into Twitter and discovered that plenty of the Toffees faithful are concerned by the decision to offload the 25-year-old.
Aside from Besic, Silva has Morgan Schneiderlin and Idrissa Gueye to chose from in holding midfield, so the 31-cap Bosnia international would almost certainly have found himself on the fringes of the first-team squad this season.
With that to consider, Everton’s decision to allow him to leave on loan was certainly the right one for all parties concerned: Besic will have plenty of opportunity to prove himself and build his match-fitness in the Championship, Boro are gaining a quality player to boost their promotion bid and Silva will not have a disgruntled backup player disrupting his dressing room.
In summary, the deal made perfect sense at this moment in time, and there’s no doubt that Besic will return a better player for the experience.
And with Besic’s contract set to expire in June 2019 it’s fair to say his stint at Boro will determine whether Everton decide to offer him a new deal before it reaches expiry.
