Everton U23 manager David Unsworth has seemingly dismissed uncertainty over the future of Toffees youth left-back Thierry Small, who has been wowing coaches at Finch Farm.
This comes after it was revealed that the 16-year-old, who is a regular for Everton’s U23s, has reportedly been attracting interest from a variety of European clubs, including Bayern Munich, Juventus, Benfica, Wolfsburg, Monaco, Valencia and the Toffees’ Premier League rivals Arsenal.
What did Unsworth have to say?
Despite attracting interest from several major European clubs, Toffees youth coach Unsworth has shared confidence that the teenager’s future lies at Goodison Park, as he has told The Liverpool Echo that Everton can give Small “a clear pathway” to first-team football and stated that the in-demand left-back is “in no better place to have a career as a Premier League footballer”.
Will Everton keep hold of Small?
Per The Daily Mail, Everton have offered Small, who has been described as ‘the best left-back in England at his age’, a ‘generous’ three-year deal to tie him down to the Merseyside club and fend off interest from elsewhere.
However, while that offer from the Toffees may well convince him to commit his future to Everton, the teenager’s page on Everton’s official website states that Small looks up to Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo and Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies, so could the opportunity to join one of those clubs and potentially become a teammate of one of those players in the future be even more alluring for Small?
It’s certainly clear that in addition to those other clubs, Everton rate the teenager highly, with Unsworth’s comments coming less than a week after the news emerged that the player has impressed enough to be drafted into first-team training at Finch Farm.
Do you think Small's future is at Everton?
So, with that in mind, hopefully, for the Toffees, Small is thinking along the same lines as Unsworth in believing that his future does lie at Goodison Park.
