Everton fans in the Tavern tonight are sad to see Lukaku go, but their sadness is quickly forgotten when they look at all the new players they have.
Despite being passed his prime in many aspects of his playing career, our landlord still believes Everton’s capture of Wayne Rooney was worth letting Lukaku go with the inclusion of £75 million.
In his 13-year career at United, Rooney captured five Premier League titles, one Champions League trophy, one FA Cup, four League Cups and one Club World Cup.
His trophy laden career with Man United has given him more experience than any other current English player.
Before Rooney’s return, the most experienced player within Everton’s ranks was probably Phil Jagielka so that is quite the improvement there.
Now before you take to the comments to say the landlord is crazy, he still believes Lukaku is a quality striker and could prove his worth under Jose Mourinho but bagging 25 league goals for Everton is different than doing it for United.
There will be a lot more pressure on the Belgian forward at his new club, and he’ll be playing Champions League football and expected to score goals there too.
Lukaku has not proven whether he is up to the challenge of being United’s number nine and he certainly hasn’t proven that he was worth £75 million, but Rooney has proved himself.
He will be a valuable asset for Everton on the pitch and in the dressing room both with his footballing ability and his mentality.
Also, Rooney will want to make his way back into the England World Cup squad so he’ll be hoping to have the season of his life.
