Newcastle United supporters in the Football Transfer Tavern were confident of signing Saint-Etiienne’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang this summer but today’s Mirror Football reports that Everton are prepared to hijack their bid to land the talented striker.
The Magpies had hoped to complete the transfer for the £15 million-rated striker when the transfer window opens next week but the Toffees and new manager Roberto Martinez want to compete with the North East club for his signature.
Alan Pardew had made Aubameyang his top transfer striker target this summer as the former West Ham United manager looks to improve on last years disappointing finish. Demba Ba departed for Chelsea in January and the club struggled to find the goals required.
Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala managed by Guus Hiddink are also contenders for the 24-year-old Gabon international forward but the Saint-Étienne man has already stated a desire to play in the Premier League next season.
Martinez will be under pressure to live up to his predecessor at Goodison Park David Moyes and he knows he must spent money on a top class forward in order to compete in the top half of the Premier League.
