The Everton fans in the Transfer Tavern have been pleased by the progress made by Tom Davies in the past two seasons, but recent reports have given them reason to believe that his immediate future could be played away from Goodison Park.
Plenty of trust has been invested into Tom Davies’ career since he broke into the first-team last season, and so far he appears to be reaping the rewards of his first-team opportunities at senior level. The 19-year-old has demonstrated a level of maturity that often eludes talented young players who get their break at an early age with his conduct both on and off the field of play.
The resident Toffees faithful lining up our bar are full of admiration for their academy product and plenty of them believe he has the potential to develop into a regular England international in the future. He has made 30 appearances for the club in the Premier League so far this season, 18 of which were from the outset, but his opportunities could dramatically decrease in number next season if there’s any truth in recent reports from Sky Sports.
According to the report, Everton are interested in signing Swansea City’s Ki Sung-Yeung this summer, although they face competition from AC Milan and four other Premier League clubs for his signature. Ki (valued at £6.3 million by Transfermarkt) has been in excellent form for the Swans this season and his performances in midfield have played an instrumental role in enabling Carlos Carvahal’s side to steer clear of the relegation zone since the turn of the year.
His arrival at Goodison would certainly be a huge bonus for the club, but the increase in competition for first-team places could force Davies into a loan deal in order to acquire first-team opportunities elsewhere. Everton already have plenty of options in midfield with Morgan Schneiderlin, Wayne Rooney, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Idrissa Gueye all to chose from aside from Davies, and that’s without considering the fact that James McCarthy will eventually return after his long-term absence through injury.
If Everton manage to negotiate a deal for Ki’s services, something will have to budge in midfield, and Davies could well be the man to make way for the Korean international. The Toffees certainly won’t be willing to entertain permanent offers for Davies, but a loan deal could be mutually beneficial for all parties concerned.
