New Everton manager Roberto Martinez appears have ambitions to recreating his old Wigan side on Merseyside this summer and Nick Lustig from the Daily Star reports that James McCarthy could be the next Latics star to join former manager at Goodison Park.
Toffees fans in the Football Transfer Tavern have some doubts about signing players from a side not good enough to remain in the Premier League although they did successful clinch a memorable FA Cup victory.
Martinez has already raided his former side to bring in striker Arouna Kone, defender Antolin Alcaraz and goalkeeper Joel Robles and now the the Republic of Ireland international midfielder could join the Toffees in a £15million deal.
McCarthy was the subject of two bids from Everton earlier in the transfer window with both turned down by chairman Dave Whelan who is holding out nearer £20m. However Martinez now hopes that an offer over £15m could be enough to secure the 22-year-old.
McCarthy was an outstanding part of the FA Cup winning Wigan side last season but was unable to help keep the side in the Premier League and the face the new season in the second tier of English football.
Former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson was known to be a fan of the former Hamilton Academical player but his retirement has left the door open for Everton to now sign the highly-rated Scottish-born midfielder.
