There’s nothing better than seeing one of the youth players make it into the first-team, is there? Indeed, Mason Holgate has the quality to take over Seamus Coleman’s spot at right-back and ramp up the excitement at Goodison Park.
The 22-year-old has been on loan at West Brom this season and he’s played 17 times since arriving in January. He’s helped them stay in the play-offs spots and has even assisted three and scored one in the process. What more can he do?
The Liverpool Echo believe there’s going to be a major squad shake-up in the summer. With that in mind, Holgate should be part of that overhaul, but he should be one to benefit. He should be brought into the squad and made the clear replacement for Seamus Coleman right away.
He’s got a great mix of defensive strength, pace and passing ability that makes him perfect to be one of the league’s top full-backs. But it’s now or never for him at Everton. If the club go and sign a right-back in summer, he’ll have no chance and would surely have to look for a move elsewhere.
The Toffees need to spend their money all over the pitch, but in this position, they have the opportunity to save some cash on one of their own. It’d send a great message to the rest of the youth team that the academy can be a place of opportunity during this exciting project.
Goodison would be buzzing to see one of their young lads make it through. It’ll save money, keep faith in the academy and could fill a position for the next 10 years. Mason Holgate needs to get his chance!
