Everton are in pursuit of a central defender this transfer window, and recent reports from outlets such as Goal have suggested that Barcelona’s Yerry Mina is the club’s primary target for the position. The Colombia international would be a terrific addition to Everton’s squad; however, it will not be an easy deal to pull off. And if that does turn out to be the case, the Toffees could look to the Championship for an alternative.
Mina’s authoritative performances with Colombia at the World Cup have caught the attention of many – including Marco Silva and Everton.
The 23-year-old has disappointed at the Camp Nou since his move to Barcelona from Palmeiras back in January and could now be on his way out of the La Liga champions.
Everton are said to be interested and have made a £21m bid for the Colombian (via Goal). But with competition likely to be fierce, the Toffees are already looking at fallback options, according to the Liverpool Echo.
One of those fallback options is said to be Swansea City’s Alfie Mawson, who is valued at £13.5m by Transfermarkt.
While the majority of Swansea players underperformed, Mawson produced some solid displays at the back. The 24-year-old not only showed that he is a capable defender, but also a player who is comfortable passing the ball and bringing it out of defence.
The former Barnsley man, who may have been called up to Gareth Southgate’s England World Cup squad if it were not for injury, is the ideal defender for Everton boss Silva.
