Everton fans in the Transfer Tavern haven’t had much to sing about following a dismal season under Sam Allardyce.
The ex-England manager has come under intense criticism after taking the reins from Ronald Koeman earlier in the season. Allardyce has lifted the Blues up the Premier League table, but performances have left the Goodison faithful disillusioned. Protests against the former West Ham boss have taken place at their last few games calling for his head.
Owner Farhad Moshiri has a huge summer ahead of him following the failures of last summer’s transfer window. High on his agenda will be a new centre-back. Phil Jagielka is approaching the end of his career, and Ashley Williams has been one of Everton’s worst players thus far.
To shore up their defence, Everton should rekindle their interest in Manchester United defender – Chris Smalling. The Blues were linked with a move for the England international back in March and should look to secure his signature when the window reopens.
The 28-year-old, who is valued at £16.2m by Transfermarkt, divides opinion amongst our punters. His performance against Tottenham in the FA Cup semi-final was nothing short of exceptional. However, he has struggled for consistency at times and never fills our punters with confidence. With Mourinho surely on the lookout for a new defender, Smalling could be on the way out.
Goodison Park would be the perfect home for the former Fulham defender alongside his international team-mate, Michael Keane. It’s previously been reported (as per the Daily Star) that it would take £25m to prise him away from Old Trafford which in the current market represents a great deal for the Toffees.
