Everton must offload midfielder to bring £35m target this summer

The Everton fans here in the Transfer Tavern are enjoying their surge up the Premier League table under Sam Allardyce and are now excited to see who he will bring in this January.

According to The Daily Star, Steven N’Zonzi is a top target for Sam Allardyce ahead of the re-opening of the transfer window.

But he will have to offload at least one midfielder to land N’Zonzi.

Allardyce is a big fan of Sevilla star N’Zonzi, having worked with him at Blackburn Rovers and he even tried to draft him in to play for the England national squad during his short stint in charge.

N’Zonzi, a towering defensive midfielder, is a target for Arsenal as well and has been linked with a £35m move to The Emirates.

The former Blackburn and Stoke midfielder is Everton’s priority for the winter transfer window but Allardyce needs to offload someone to make room for him.

Ross Barkley could be the man to depart – the 24-year-old has been linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur after failing to secure a summer move to Chelsea.

But, according to this report, Everton will also consider offers for Gylfi Sigurdsson or Davy Klaassen – both of whom were signed in the summer by Ronald Koeman.

Landlord’s verdict

Steven N’Zonzi is a dominant and powerful central midfielder who would undoubtedly be a top signing for Everton.

But at the price of £35m, that money could be better invested elsewhere, such as signing a top class striker to get them to kick on to the next level.

Players like Sigurdsson and Klaassen need more time to settle into the team too.
