I thought someone had got lucky on the fruit machines, as the Football Transfer Tavern ruptured into loud cheers; however, it was the reaction to Clive Hetherington of The Express telling the punters that FC Porto’s defender, Rolando rejected Queens Park Rangers in January, despite Harry Redknapp making a personal visit to the defender.
On the subject of Rolando, Clive also had news that Everton and Newcastle United have been quoted £5 million, if they wish to secure the Portuguese international’s services.
Rolando has spent five seasons at the Portuguese club, but was loaned to Serie A outfit, Napoli for the second half of last season after Porto manager, Vitor Pereira ostracized the defender from the squad and therefore, Porto are keen to do a deal.
Roberto Martinez continues to add his ‘style’ to Everton and the Toffees could be looking at a new look defensive partnership, with Martinez having already strengthened his defence with the free signing of Paraguayan international Antolin Alcaraz from his former club Wigan Athletic.
Rumours constantly surround Newcastle’s Fabricio Coloccini, who is linked with a return to Argentina, so a few punters here reckon that Rolando has been earmarked as his replacement.
It is unknown whether Rolando is a target of Alan Pardew’s or Joe Kinnear’s but Clive did mention that Pardew has told Kinnear to get him Aston Villa striker, Darren Bent and QPR striker, Loic Remy.
