Everton open transfer talks to sign 24-year-old international

Everton Everton fans in the Football Transfer Tavern are still waiting on the new signings promised by Roberto Martinez, with one punter noting over a pint that it is going to be difficult to lure the right players in at this point in the transfer window.

The summer has been dominated with stories regarding John Stones and a potential switch to Chelsea, rather than any defensive reinforcements coming in the other way – until now that is.

Our landlord reckons the Liverpool Echo says the Toffees have opened talks with River Plate over the transfer of south American defender Ramiro Funes Mori.

The 24-year-old is an Argentine international, and is set to cost around £5.5million.

The Toffees have been to South America to watch the 6’2” defender, who has been credited with playing a major role in River Plate’s recent revival which has seen them lift trophies including the Copa Libertadores and the Argentina Primera Division Superfinal last May.

Martinez has had to oversee the departures of Sylvain Distin and Antolin Alcarez this summer, and sees a defender to support Stones and Phil Jagielka as the transfer priority.
