Crystal Palace continued their good form this weekend, with Bakary Sako’s goal ensuring Roy Hodgson’s men picked up three points in a hard-fought encounter with high-flying Burnley.
The Eagles have been resurgent under the former England and Liverpool boss, and now lie a relieving five points clear of the Premier League bottom-three. Fans here in The Transfer Tavern are delighted with the efforts of Hodgson so far, and are growing increasingly confident that their side will retain their top-flight status for at least another term. However despite their excellent form, fans are keen to see changes to the squad, with new additions necessary if this side are to ensure their rise up the table continues. A new goalkeeper was one area highlighted by Palace fans over a cold pint with our landlord, who couldn’t help but recommend taking a look at Everton’s Joel Robles.
The 27-year-old is likely to leave the Toffees in the summer with his contract due to expire, and losing his starting berth to Jordan Pickford is unlikely to convince the player that his future lies at Goodison Park. Palace are desperate for a new shot stopper, and Robles could prove to be the perfect option on all fronts. It may be unlikely that Everton will allow the player to leave this month given a lack of depth behind Pickford, but Hodgson could begin to sound the player out for a summer move given his contract status.
Robles was unlucky to lose his starting spot, with the mega-money signing of Pickford from Sunderland in the summer resulting in his demotion to the bench, and the player is certainly of Premier League standard. If Hodgson can convince the player his future lies at Selhurst Park, then Palace’s goalkeeper woes could be solved for the next ten years if all goes to plan. The fact that Robles would be available for nothing is just an extremely satisfying bonus.
