Everton supporters have been significantly more buoyant in the Transfer Tavern in the last few hours after seeing their side get back to winning ways in the Premier League with a 2-1 victory over Leicester City on Wednesday night.
Sam Allardyce’s men went into their clash with the Foxes having failed to win any of their preceding six league games, with three draws and three losses bringing the threat of relegation right back into the fold. Nonetheless, the Toffees moved eight points clear of the bottom three on Wednesday as a Theo Walcott brace helped them to victory over Claude Puel’s side, who responded late on through Jamie Vardy but were ultimately unable to secure a point from the encounter.
Subsequently, there have been many upbeat Evertonians in the Tavern in recent times, and they are likely to be intrigued by a recent report from The Independent, which suggests that the Toffees pushed for an agreement with Derby County to take Ademola Lookman on loan prior to his surprise move to RB Leipzig.
The 20-year-old has struggled for regular football at Goodison Park this season and things haven’t improved greatly since Allardyce was appointed in November, with just 16 appearances, of which just five have been starts, to show for his efforts this term.
And the England Under-20 World Cup winner surprisingly sealed a loan move to Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig on deadline day, all the more intriguing given that Everton reportedly sought an agreement with Championship promotion hopefuls Derby to take the winger on loan for the rest of the season.
Nonetheless, it is Leipzig who have secured Lookman’s services until the summer, in a move which hasn’t gone down too well with some of our resident Toffees fans.
Landlord’s verdict: Ademola Lookman burst onto the scene at Everton back in January 2017 with a goal minutes into his debut against Manchester City, but things since then haven’t quite gone as well for the winger.
The 20-year-old has managed just five starts in all competitions for the Toffees this season and things haven’t improved greatly under new boss Sam Allardyce, so it’s perhaps not overly surprising to see him seal a loan move on deadline day.
But a loan move to Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig is somewhat surprising, and reports detail further intrigue as Everton reportedly sought an agreement with Derby County to take the England Under-20 World Cup winner on loan instead.
And while some Evertonians are frustrated that a player like Lookman has been allowed to leave, it may well have made greater sense for him to play in a promotion-seeking Derby side in the second half of the season.
