The Everton fans in the Transfer Tavern are keen for their side’s spending to continue…
The Toffees have enjoyed quite the summer so far, having rebuilt their side from the ground up, and it doesn’t appear as though their spending is going to stop anytime soon.
Indeed, the fans in the Transfer Tavern are expecting a few more signings before the summer is out, and Dominic King of the Daily Mail is reporting on Twitter that the Toffees could make a surprise move for a 2-time league winner.
According to King, Everton are considering a move for Thomas Vermaelen, formerly of Arsenal and currently of Barcelona, as a potential solution to their lack of defensive depth.

At this point, it doesn’t appear as though a move is close to being made, but Everton clearly have a need for a player in his position.
Everton’s first line of defence is strong, but beyond the likes of Phil Jagielka and Ashley Williams, they aren’t exactly blessed with defensive depth. In that sense, a move for the Belgian might make sense.
On paper, a move for Vermaelen could be a wise one.
He has won a couple of league titles with Barcelona, whilst he was very impressive for Arsenal during his spell with the London-based side. He is a leader and a marshal at the back, and that could be what Everton need.
However, in reality, the move makes little sense. He has spent the majority of the last few years on the injury table, with the Belgian really struggling for fitness since moving to Spain, and given that he is now 31-years-old, that situation is likely to only worsen.
A backup defender needs to be reliable, and his fitness issues mean that he simply is not.
