Everton supporters have been drowning their sorrows in the Transfer Tavern for much of the current campaign, and their mood was hardly lifted after watching the Toffees struggle to a 1-1 draw at Brighton on Sunday.
Ronald Koeman’s men went into their clash at the AMEX Stadium having won just two of their opening seven league games, and looked set to suffer a fourth successive away defeat of the campaign when Anthony Knockaert gave Chris Hughton’s Seagulls the lead eight minutes from time. However, the Merseyside outfit did take a point from proceedings when Wayne Rooney converted a 90th minute penalty following Bruno’s elbow on Dominic Calvert-Lewin, but it has done little to generate any more optimism among our resident Evertonians lining up at the bar in the Tavern.
However, there may be some encouragement to come for those hardy Toffees supporters if a recent report from Hot Sport is anything to go by, which suggests that Everton have joined the race to land Red Star Belgrade striking sensation Richmond Boakye.
The 24-year-old made a permanent move to the Serbian outfit back in June of this year after seriously impressing during a loan spell the season before, in which time he bagged an impressive 15 goals in just 19 games to help the club finish second in the division.
And with 11 goals in 17 games in all competitions this time round, eight of which coming in the Europa League, the Ghana international continues to go from strength to strength, and as such he is attracting interest from several clubs in the UK, most notably heavyweights Chelsea, Celtic, and now Everton.
And with the Toffees struggling for goals, having bagged just five in the league so far, Boakye could be the answer to their striking woes, but whether they can steal a march on the other interested sides very much remains to be seen.
Landlord’s verdict: Everton are in dire need of striking reinforcements in January having scored just five times in the Premier League thus far, three of which coming from Wayne Rooney.
They’ve been linked to a whole host of names since the window slammed shut, namely Bas Dost and Kevin Gameiro, and now Red Star Belgrade goal-scoring sensation Richmond Boakye is another they are keeping tabs, and there’s little wonder why.
The 24-year-old has scored 28 goals in just 37 games for the club since the turn of the year to make him one of the most prolific forwards in Europe, but it’s not just Ronald Koeman who is keeping an eye on his progress, as heavyweights Chelsea and Celtic are also thought to be interested.
Thus, it’s not going to be easy for the Toffees to lure him to Goodison Park, but given their current striking issues, it’s a deal they must seek to get done in January.
